Items Needed
We are always in need of various items to help feed and care for the wildlife at our centre.
Particular items that we regularly use are:
- Strong black bin liners
- Washing up liquid
- Meaty loaf cat/dog food
- Meaty cat biscuits
- Bird seed
- Newspapers
- Clean towels and fleece blankets
- Kitchen towels
We also have an amazon wishlist which has the most up to date information on the items which we are most in need of. Please sort the list by priority high to low to see what we require the most.
Alternatively, we regularly order from Welland Valley Feeds in Market Harborough. They have a list of the items we use so that you are able to call (01858 461 463) or visit them directly to place an order that gets sent straight to us.
Volunteer with us
We rely on volunteers every day to help us look after the wildlife in our care, to maintain our buildings and gardens, and to help raise vital funds for us.
Due to insurance reasons, we can only take on volunteers that are over the age of 16.
Students who are required to complete work experience hours as part of their course are able to do that with us but spaces are limited and commitment must be to a full day.
If you are interested in volunteering, please download an application form by clicking here and email it back to us. Please write if you would like to volunteer with animal care, gardening, maintenance or fundraising.
We will then be in touch to arrange this with you dependent upon our availability.
Baby Bird Foster Volunteers
Here at the Leicestershire wildlife hospital, we are currently in the process of setting up a bird rearing ‘foster’ system to assist with the ever-increasing numbers of orphaned birds we admit to the centre each year. This includes hatchlings, nestlings and fledglings of a variety of species.
The role is home based, but transport must be available in order to collect the birds from our hospital in Kibworth, to bring them back once weaned, and in case of any emergencies with the birds you are rearing.
The birds will need feeding between every 20 minutes to every 2 hours (depending on age) from 7am to 10pm. The birds will remain in your care for the full duration of rearing (with full guidance from our team) which will be 2 weeks on average but up to 4 weeks. The birds will then be brought back to the hospital once weaned.
Please note this role is for the rearing of birds ONLY. This is not for mammals at present but once you are trained in bird rearing, you may be able to train further to be able to do this in the future.
Previous experience with wildlife or birds is not essential but is preferred. Full training will be given.
You must be able to maintain high levels of animal husbandry.
You must be 18+. This role is not to be shared with other family members as the birds cannot be habituated to too many people.
You must have an area in your home that is fully away from any pets.
You must be able to follow our strict protocol as a volunteer fosterer as we must ensure these birds can be released back into the wild.
All equipment will be provided but it will be necessary to use your own electricity.
If you are interested in this volunteer role, please complete the following application form (click here to download)
(please note this is a different form to our usual application form and states ‘hand rear fosterer’ at the top)
Please send your application to us via email: [email protected]
If you have any questions about volunteering, please send us an email or call our team on 07951 285 366. Thanks!
